What's the best icon tutorial you've seen? One you keep coming back to and look at and try to get better at? asked by [personal profile] tinny

I do make most of my icons using a trial and error method but when I first started trying to make animated icons, I used YT and LJ tutorials for reference a lot. For blending too, I tried following some good ones but I couldn't really follow along because my brain melts when I see layer masks and other cool features being used, lol.

THIS tutorial by [personal profile] aurora_amethyst has been on my list to try and I did but like I said,I'm not good at using a lot of features,so I couldn't use the tutorial a 100%, though I did like 90% of it. Also the choice of screencap probably made it different too. But I learned how to use gradient maps so that's pretty awesome!
Here's what I got. I wanted to adjust the face colouring using selective colour but I kind of wanted to keep the original result here. I'll give it a go another time and see where I get to!:D

For a few others that I like:

THIS falling petals tutorial on LJ is absolutely one of my favourites.

THIS very pretty colouring tutorial where I mainly started learning to use selective colour from (but still can't get the pretty effect mei_ling7 did) is another favourite of mine.

For blocking and blending I do check in on THIS tutorial a lot because I cannot get these effects a 100% and the example icons are just so beautiful!

What are your five favorite animated series or movies? asked by [personal profile] sakana17

AAHHH!Well well, now this is...a difficult choice to make! Only 5?! Haha, I'll absolutely try to narrow it down. I do find myself more inclined to watch animated series rather than movies so I think I'll probably focus more on those here.
Here we go from my top 5 to 1:
Cinderella 3-A twist in time:

This movie is just such a lovely, comforting movie. It's dramatic and totally shows us so much more of the prince and Cinderella's magical love, Anastasia's sweet character and of course the iconic scene of the prince jumping out of the window!XD I wasn't always the biggest fan of Cinderella, sure I liked the cartoon but not like I used to rewatch it and all. This 3rd part came out of nowhere and became a favourite!

What do your first and most recent fandoms have in common? asked by [personal profile] solo

My first fandom was Harry Potter and fandom-wise I'd say it's 'The Untamed'. Well, those are two very different fandoms, indeed! :D But once I started thinking, wow, there's quite a lot of things I'd say are common.

But I think one common factor is that they're heavily fantasy based. Magic, spells, duels are the obvious ones.

Going a little deeper, there's a separation system- 4 houses in Harry Potter, the 5 great clans in The Untamed.
The main character - Harry in HP, Wei Wuxian in The Untamed-is dark-haired.

They are also orphans and are taken in by others. Both the 'mother figure' role that they should have gotten love and affection from pretty much hated them.
Both stories have traitors who were like best friends ( Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter & Jin Guangyao in The Untamed) whose actions led to those very friends to die.

On a brighter side- TRIOS! The golden trio of Harry, Hermione and Ron are one of my absolute favourites in any fandom. In The Untamed we have Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli-The Yunmeng trio. Though the ends of each trio are vastly different, both have a special place in my heart. Have 2 pics!

Sooooo, yeah, that was quite a bit of analysis for my brain. Keep the questions coming, guys over here. Ask me twice even, if you like!:D

What's your favorite coloring technique for making icons? asked by [personal profile] aurora_amethyst .

Sorry, this was supposed to be yesterday's but I couldn't get time so here it is. :D

Soft and saturated colouring. When I say this, I mean somewhat pastel colours but the overall icon to not be muted, though muted colouring is one of the techniques I enjoy doing. I like it when the colours overall give an impression of pastel look but the subjects stand out and the overall icon still has distinct colours visible. I’ll add some examples to get an idea, haha!

I also really love contrast in colours, where the colours are either complementary or just not at all a shade close to each other. Here are some pretties!

What's the first fandom you ever made icons for?
asked by [personal profile] trobadora

My first fandom for making icons was BBC Merlin. I used to be in other fandoms but I used to write and draw. Icon making was not something I had found out until around 2014. At the time I came across merlinstills on livejournal through some other comms and since I had finished watching Merlin then,it was perfect! It used to be a very active community among many Merlin fans. The challenges were weekly and later bi-weekly until LJ kind of started falling away. Gosh, just talking about this comm makes me so nostalgic!

One of my favourite things in this community was how ideas were switched up, sometimes we'd have cast-centered challenges, or AU challenges, battles etc. apart from the usual thematic challenges.

I went through some of my old icons of Merlin to showcase here. Wow! In some ways my style has changed a lot, but when I see some icons, I feel like there are some constants-like my love for lighting lol!

Some icons from oldest to newest:

Like only...35 more icons, yes, I got a bit carried away.Oops. )
